By One of the most highly touted features of a shotgun today is the mysterious lengthened forcing cone. Lengthened forcing cones have been touted to reduce recoil, give higher velocities, improve patterns and just about everything else you can imagine—perhaps giving us more miles per gallon as well. It falls into the category of what we like to ... In Tom Roster's Shotgun Barrel Alteration Manual Tom documented the velocity loss from back-boring as "35 - 125 fps." Back-boring and forcing cone work guarantees lower muzzle velocities due to increased barrel volume. It is just a question of how much which will vary indefinitely by individual gun and specific shell.I want to keep the factory fixed full choke in the barrel. I'd just like to lengthen the forcing cone with a long taper and have the inside of the barrel over bored to about .740 - .745 all the way down to about the last 4 or 5 inches from the muzzle. The over boring of the barrel would change the % of constriction of the choke, correct?Long Forcing Cones and Back-boring = "Waste of Money" 2,751 views Mar 21, 2021 70 Dislike Share Save Randy Wakeman 22.6K subscribers Way too much money is wasted on forcing cone work, back-boring,...Back-boring increases bore diameter specifications and decreases friction between the shot cup and the bore to maximize shot pellet velocity and to reduce felt recoil. Back Boring in layman's terms Put simply, back boring takes a standard shotgun barrel and increases the volume. This is done by removing some of the material from within the barrel to create more space. Most of this space is created around the bore of the barrel to taper the amount of internal friction. How smooth that transition is depends on the length of the Forcing Cone. ... The Vang Comp Process of "Lengthening the Forcing Cone to 2", Back Boring the barrel to .745 and then choking it back down to .730 at the muzzle as well as Porting the barrel with 62, 1/16" holes about 2" behind the muzzle, has proven to yield 7" patterns of 00 ...Back boring a barrel is more time consuming and labor intensive then lengthening a forcing cone. However, it is still enjoyable and provides excellent results. We were equipped with three reamers; Clymer .730″ 184-030-730WB , Clymer .735″ 184-030-735WB, and a Manson .740″ 513-030-740WB, as well as a 34″ Clymer back bore handle 184-030-012WB.As wads transformed from cards to gas-sealing over-powder cups, the need for a sharp forcing cone angle became unnecessary. Today, we see shotguns advertised that boast forcing cones as long as 5". To choose the right cartridge you need: The right calibre. The right length for the chamber. The right shot size for your quarry. They have extended forcing cones and 3" (76mm) chambers proofed for steel shot. There is minimal 'tromboning' at the muzzles to accommodate the new 'Invector DS' sytem chokes. The length is not really the point; it is the degree of taper. Theoretically, a gentler taper is less disruptive to shot and wad. The area in a shotgun barrel just in front of the chamber that directs the shot load into the bore is called the forcing cone. The Vang Comp System is a set of modifications to a shotgun's barrel. These modifications include back boring the barrel, adding compensating ports, and lengthening the forcing cone. The back-boring of the barrel is accomplished by boring the barrel from the chamber toward the muzzle end and creating a choke. That "back boring" is simply another method for adding a choke to the barrel. When shotshells were metallic- or paper-hulled and used fiber wads, the forcing cone in front of the chamber was very short, typically 1/4 inch or less (see Figure 1). This was done to assist the wad in sealing the propellant gases behind it, reducing blow-by of the powder gases and subsequent voids in the shot swarm. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Browning was the first manufacturer to recognize the advantages of a back-bored barrel. With select shotguns Browning has gone a step further with Vector Pro, featuring a longer forcing cone than found on other systems. This long, gradual taper minimizes shot deformation and maximizes pattern uniformity, consistency and density. Use a long forcing cone. The forcing cone is a "funnel" tapering from the throat to the bore. The chamber area has to be large enough to fit the cartridge. The rest of the bore is smaller. A sharp angle from chamber diameter to bore diameter can deform the shot. A gradual change (greater angle; longer forcing cone) will deform the shot less. One of the most highly touted features of a shotgun today is the mysterious lengthened forcing cone. Unless you plan to use your barrel as a grain funnel, or to change the oil in your transmission, forget an 18-degree forcing cone. Don't go a single degree wider than 11-degrees. A 5-degree forcing cone works well when chamber/bore alignment is close. Chamber offset allows a bullets to flounder in a deep forcing cone, obturating the projectile.Lengthening the forcing cone and back boring will reduce felt recoil.
